The Legacy of Social Work
Commissioned to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Jackson State University’s School of Social Work, the 30 Years of Resilience mural honors the legacy and leadership that laid the foundation for one of Mississippi’s most impactful academic programs. Installed at the School of Social Work–Master of Social Work Program building, the mural debuted during the “Recovering Thee History” celebration and reflects three decades of dedication to social justice, education, and community service.
The mural features hand-painted portraits of six pioneering figures who shaped the school’s identity and mission: Dr. Gwendolyn Prater, Dr. Jean Brooks, Ruth Williams, Dr. James Brooks, Ms. Eva Bowie Ellis, and Dr. Phyllis Hammond. Rendered in Jackson State’s signature color palette, each portrait stands as a tribute to their contributions to both the institution and the communities it serves.
This commemorative piece stands not only as a celebration of the past but as a lasting visual reminder of the school’s continued commitment to empowering future generations of social workers.
